Royal Hangmen- Hanged, Drawn & Quartered LP. When you think about Swiss garage rock, you probably think about bands like The Sevens, Nightbirds, Come n’ Go and Bad Generation. But the newest band leading the pack, by far, are the Royal Hangmen. On their second album ‘Hanged, Drawn & Quartered’, they dial up 11 searing tracks of 60s-styled garage rock spewing with fuzzed-out guitars, thumping drums and a liberating Hammond organ. They do a pretty good job of capturing the sounds of ‘65 and ‘66, mainly through bands like the Shadows of Knight and early Stones as well as throwing in a few screamers that remind me a little of the revival bands like the Lyres, Morlocks and the Fuzztones. Vocalist Vasco Saxer has the attitude and pipes to sell lyrics like “You Got No Soul”. And the guitars always seem to have just the right tone and work really with the organ. The Royal Hangmen also dip into ‘60s beat with the instrumental “Groovadelic,” riff to a Yardbirds bass line on “Go Away Baby” and turn psychedelic on “Step Out Of The Dark” and “Feed The Monkey.” Their last album on Screaming Apple was good, but this album is on a whole ‘nother level. Great record! Import from Germany.
