Hasil Adkins- Chicken Walk LP. Stellar 14 track reissue from the American outsider and legend, Hasil Adkins. Hasil was a true American original. Raised in Boone County, West Virginia, the son of a coal miner, Adkins grew up in poverty in a tarpaper shack on coal company property, where he taught himself to play guitar after hearing Hank Williams on the radio. The legend goes that he didn't realize Hank had a band backing him up, and that's why Hasil learned to play guitar and drums at the same time because that’s the way he thought Hank Wiliams played. Adkins wrote tons of amazing original material beginning in the 1950’s which explored an affinity for country music and rock ‘n roll. On this record he really does sound like a deranged Hank Williams. He has the same style of true country music but with quite a weird since of humor and playing with a rock ‘n roll heart. His song topics range from chicken to love to women to booze to his made up dance the hunch and back to chicken. This is a great collection of some of his earliest material. The recording quality isn’t great, but you quickly forget that when you realize it’s just a one man force trying to do it himself in the 50’s before any big record companies came calling. It’s raw, wild, primitive and 100% Hasil.
