Gee Strings- I’m So Gee LP ~KILLER!
Gee Strings- I’m So Gee LP. Nothing puts me in a happier place than hearing '77 style punk rock played well and I can always count on Germany's Gee Strings to play some of the best top-notch '77 style punk around. These guys have been going at it since 1994 and sound better than ever on their new LP ‘I’m So Gee’. Founding members Ingi and Bernadette are two of the best in the business - the latter a red hot guitarist in the Steve Jones/Johnny Thunders/Cheetah Chrome mold and the former sounding like the love child of Joan Jett and Iggy Pop. While very much sticking to the band's roots in Pistols/Thunders/ Ramones territory, ‘I Am So Gee’ is far from predictable or repetitive. Showing their experience and maturity, the band pulls from a wide variety of songwriting influences within the early punk rock realm. I like that these songs are built around a combination of classic punk sounding riffs and really strong hooks. The straight-up '77-style slammers like "Trying To Forget" and "Have To Say" are really good while "Can't Call It Love" and "I Will Get You" fully embrace the melodic/power pop side of '77 punk which The Gee’s aren’t typically know for. And the super-catchy, playful and peppy "The Punk" could almost pass for a long-lost Rezillos tune. Closing track "Punk Rock Heart" is about as close to a ballad as you’ll ever hear from them, and I really feel the passion and sincerity coming through with enough distortion on the guitars and vocal hooks to make the tune work. Another winner here from the Gees. Recommended. Spanish import on Ghost Highway Records.

Los Angeles' the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs spew a raw, undistilled slab of sweet ‘n nasty sonic tonic on their 7th studio album 'One More Drink'. The Cheetahs reignite the raw Detroit sounds of the the Stooges and fellow down under countrymen Radio Birdman blasting through 11 red-hot tracks of over-amplified nihilism showing even further dexterity in the world of thick riffs and song writing versatility. ‘One More Drink’ sounds like the good kind of mid 70’s pre-punk Riff 'n Roll record hopped-up on a heavy dose of classic 80's, white lightnin’ radio Rock. They mix an absolutely perfect Rock 'n Roll cocktail here...
