SA90- Johnny On The Phone LP. SA90 are a newer band from Santa Cruz taking their name from a type of TDK High Bias cassette tape that many of the band members probably used when they were younger. After a self released EP, SA90 are back with their debut LP here. On ‘Johnny On The Phone’ they develop their style of aggressive Dangerhouse Records punk meets early 80s SoCal hardcore even further and it's a beast. SA90 are one of those bands that kind of fall in that fertile little gap between punk and hardcore. Their music is tough driving hardcore in song structure, density, and execution, but the vocals are big and melodic with a healthy dose of punk snot and aggression. Penelope Houston from the Avengers would be a pretty apt vocal comparison with a burly backing band that sounds like they include members of the Bags, Circle Jerks and the Nuns. The record cover is a nice homage to the classic ‘Rodney On The Roq: Volume 2’ compilation, so it’s no surprise that Rodney Bingenheimer has been spinning this one like crazy. The LP also includes an insert with lyrics, credits, and photos and they’re pressed on various shades of colored wax. Recommended.
