Wood Chickens- Countrycide LP. The Wood Chickens are a caffeine fueled cowpunk band outta Madison, WI burning down barns across the U.S. This LP includes a myriad of influences, but the majority of the record is melodic, upbeat, and revved-up country punk that sounds like a cross between Reverend Horton Head, the Supersuckers and more traditional cowpunk bands like the Elmer, Nine Pound Hammer and the Cowslingers. These guys are good players and it's awesome that they can mix country and punk rock in a way that's not annoying like a lot of other bands that try to combine the two. And they do mix things up ocassionally on songs like “Angie Hosh” and “Dyin’ On The Vine” which are straight-up hardcore punk tunes not unlike Everything Falls Apart-era Hüskers with blazing guitar solos set to an amped up cowpunk back beat. And “Flesh ‘N’ Blood” is a very Minutemen-esque song that also rules pretty hard. I was ready to dismiss this LP as forgettable generic cowpunk, but after giving it a few spins you realize there’s so many more layers to this band than just that. It’s a fun listen. Recorded by Bobby Hussy and mixed by Jim Diamond. THIS IS THE LIMITED VERSION OF THIS LP ON GREEN WAX!
