Sweet Things- Slather 7”. It’s been a few years now since I first raved about The Sweet Things. A proper debut vinyl single finally arrived this year, and now we get single #2 from this great rock ‘n roll band from New York City. I'm especially happy about this release because it's the first time I've heard new songs from The Sweet Things in a few years. The title track is an all out rocker and totally fits in with The Sweet Things signature sound of dirty, boozy rock n' roll in the vein of '70s Stones, Izzy Stradlin, solo Keith Richards and early Black Crowes. It’s a damn fine song! You get another strong vocal performance from Dave, guitars firing on all cylinders, and terrific piano work from the great Rob Clores. ‘Slather’ is a shining example of The Sweet Things' ability to draw a song past the four minute marker without letting things get dull, indulgent or predictable. On the B-side "Dustianne" is an outsstanding duet between lead guitar slinger Dave and New York soul singer Liza Colby. It's a wonderful pairing and a soulful rocker that you can totally feel deep down. Another winner from this great NYC powerhouse showing that they’re, by far, one of the best new bands playing good straight up rock ‘n roll alongside Dr. Boogie and the Lovesores. If you don't already have the "Love To Leave" single, be sure to pick that up as well because it’s just as good.
